In green building we often focus within the building envelop when in fact many of the greatest impacts can be made in simple siting and orientation. Understanding where we are in ecological contexts as well as social and cultural ones can help us to insure that our projects are not only causing the least damage but actually acting to restore these communities. From restoring hydrological functioning to increasing habitat and re-knitting human communities, context is the key to placing and structuring ourselves appropriately. By understanding the evolutionary trajectory and dynamic systems of a place we can see how to help to initiate positive change within these systems rather than the downward spiral so much development has wrought. We will talk in general as well as look at examples from projects.
