Current sustainable building and design practices mandate goals of enhancing indoor air quality and improving building occupant health and productivity. Indoor air quality is a responsibility, challenge, and liability for architects all at the same time. Recent technological advances in design, construction, and procurement practices allow for healthier, indoor environments. These practices include the selection and use of low-emitting, non-toxic construction materials, building construction techniques such as sequencing and building flush out, and commissions with pre and post occupancy air testing to ensure that acceptable chemical levels are achieved. This presentation will introduce the audience to the basic concepts of indoor air quality design and management, were to find readily available resources and tools, and how to create healthy indoor environments with little to no extra cost and effort.
