Sustainable Site Selection: Low Impact Development: 2 Cases in Arkansas Residential Planning

      When: Tuesday, April 17, 2007
      Residential Track: 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Steve Luoni, Director of the University of Arkansas Community Design Center

      For Steve's bio CLICK HERE!

The presentation will address two Arkansas neighborhood developments planned by the University of Arkansas Community Design Center that have received national recognition for green design. Each project incorporates Low Impact Development (LID), a regenerative planning approach to improve a site’s delivery of ecological services in the course of its development. Since sustainability ultimately solves for the triple bottom line ¾ integrating environment, economic, and social measures ¾ LID technology is a foundation for enhancing neighborhood affordability and social capital. LID technologies: “shared streets”, “green streets”, conservation planning, indigenous landscaping, and “veranda urbanism” begin to constitute a holistic design framework. Case studies will also examine interdisciplinary planning collaborations, featuring ecological engineering solutions for civil infrastructure design. LID will not only maximize ecological and urban services in development, but also provide multiplier benefits necessary to achieve true sustainability.
